Spring Ops 3 (Drone Operations) - Flight Planning Preperation
Before the first drone leaves the ground, Jason Lau’s flight planning shapes the entire drone operations season.
This year’s target: a daily average of 24–30 flights per drone.
Weeks in advance, Jason Lau and the pilot team use satellite imagery, terrain models, ground photos, and maps to identify potential obstacles, evaluate altitude constraints, and calculate exactly how many flights each block or area will take to complete. This drives decisions on work schedules, equipment staging, and seed pod preparation, all of which are critical to getting as many seed pods into the ground as possible during the ideal timing window.
While the pilots are getting ready, the drones need to be prepared as well. Firmware updates, test flights, and preventive maintenance are all non-negotiable.
By the time the team arrives on site, every drone is dialed in, with every flight route ready to go.
